Self-Preservation Fundamentals

iCombatives’ training programs are structured as a gradual progression beginning with “self-preservation” – the stuff you need to know to protect yourself and loved ones from the threat of violence – and ranging through to various degrees of “self-perfection”, where the reason you train and your skills go beyond self-defense and into the realm of self-actualization. Our approach is in line with “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs“, which essentially boils down to “first taking care of your basic need to eat, and only then getting fancy with your food“. Similarly, make sure you’ve first got a rock-solid foundation in counter-violence tactics before going off to explore the more esoteric aspects of the martial arts, which – not to downplay them – are no less beneficial than the self-preservation aspects.
